The Monta Vista track and field teams wrapped up the 2023 SCVAL dual meet season with a satisfying and successful day at Fremont high school on Tuesday, April 11, 2023!  In a double-dual competition with Fremont and Cupertino, which saw MacDonald high school also competing against Fremont, half of the El Camino division teams were present in what was essentially a league championship preview meet.

The first individual race on the track was an indication of what was to come, as Ravi Polisetti, Sola Nojima, Soham Beesetti, William Wu, Lilia Murase and Madi Polidoro all had personal records in the 1600–with Madi coming in under that magic 6 minute mark with a 5:59.77 to win the junior varsity girls division.  Anika Bhandarkar, Avani Kalari, Sydney Stevens, and Nerea Northrop all had season bests and Monta Vista was off and running!

Monta Vista athletes would go on to set 61 personal records during Tuesday’s competition; as we get to the end of the season, the goal is to be performing at our best, however 61 records in a single meet is still remarkable.  There is a complete list of PRs at the bottom of this post (well, hopefully that is a complete list, if I missed your PR I apologize!  let me know and I will add your mark).

Freshman field event athletes, along with Coach Emma and Coach Samantha, please come on stage and take a bow…Gillie Ross threw a 97′-5″ personal record in the discus that is not only the longest toss of any freshman girl in the 150 school Central, but she is outgrowing the number two girl by 16 feet!  Fiona Rusak has the number three discus mark, 79′-3″, of any freshman girl in discus, and Gillie is also leading all CCS freshmen in shot with her 30′-4″ effort–the only freshman in CCS to crack 30 feet.  Freshman Lelani Laruelle is in a three-way tie at the top of the list of CCS freshman with her 5′-0″ clearance, has the second longest freshman long jump (15′-11″) and triple jump (32′-10″).  Lauren Moore checks in with the number 14 triple this season and Alex Sharma owns the number 24 discus mark.  The freshman boy jumpers feature Agasthya Koturi’s 40′-5″ triple jump PR, good for fourth among CCS freshmen (these are the only four freshman boys to crack 40 so far this season.  Last year, only one freshman boy in CCS broke 40′ all year!).  Agasthya’s 19′ long jump has him in the top ten for  freshmen in that event, too.  Freshmen Ryan Shen and Joseph Han have matching 5′-6″ high jump PRs and they join a small group in a tie for the fourth best mark among CCS freshman.

That is a remarkable group of freshman athletes coming from one public high school!  This is a lot of potential on one team.  Along with some of our other young athletes in other events, and young motivated field event coaches, the Monta Vista track team could have something really special happen over the next few years.  It’s a lot of work, but oh so satisfying!

As you might expect with so many strong individual performances, the team results were satisfying also.  The varsity girls won team contests with both Fremont and Cupertino, to finish the season with a 3-3 dual meet record (that included two close losses by only 5 and 6 points!).  The junior varsity girls and frosh-soph boys also picked up two wins (both squads also finished 3-3), while the varsity boys split, overcoming Cupertino while falling to Fremont (wrapping the season at 2-4).  This was a strong way to end the league season, and with so many younger athletes, the future for MVTF is bright!

Complete results for our double-dual meet have been posted.

Saturday, April 15, while adults across the country scramble to calculate and pay their income taxes, Monta Vista athletes will head to the CCS Last Chance Invitational at Mountain View High School.  We are still waiting for final acceptances and a meet program.  During break week we will have important practices at 4pm all week, and when we come back from break the post-season begins:  El Camino League trials and finals on April 26 and 28, the SCVAL championships on May 5, CCS trials on May 13 then CCS Championships May 20.  Whew!

And don’t forget to keep the season banquet on your calendar–Wednesday, May 17.  This date is updated from the original schedule so please go back and check this on your personal calendar!
