A quick note…
On a Saturday morning with the weather feeling more like the RustBuster than a championship season outdoor track meet, Monta Vista athletes came to compete for CCS berths. The SCVAL Championship meet was held at Los Gatos High School on May 6, on a cold and drizzly day.
The throwers were on site early, as Alice Ross and Lavinia Lei were first up. Both throwers were competing in shot, then discus. Alice had season bests in both shot and discus, advancing to CCS with a 5th place in discus, while the weather was tough on both of our girls.
Field events were strong for Monta Vista, continuing a season long trend. Clara Fan and Lelani Laruelle both advanced in high jump; Clara added a berth in the triple and Lelani had a PR 16’4″ to advance in the long jump. Senior Joey Suresh and soph Darren Lin also competed in long and triple. Darren was the highest-placing sophomore in SCVAL in the triple jump and the second sophomore in long, while no freshman or sophomores jumped further than Clara or Lelani in the high, long or triple jumps–our field event futures look bright!
On the track, Ethan Lu punched his ticket for CCS in the 110m hurdles with Denny Dong advancing in the 800m, while Yvonne Chen will be at CCS in the 300m hurdles. The girls’ 4x100m relay team of Clara, Katie Lee, Maya Mizrahi and Lelani is first alternate, missing the last spot by less than a quarter second–three of the girls are coming back for at least two more years, so we can build on that 51.32 season best time. Hayden Selvakumar had a PR of 53.06 for the 400m in his last high school race, and Valerie Ayzenberg cracked 3:3o in the 800 for the first time–a sparkling personal best 2:27.98 to build upon! Katie Lee (100m and 200m), Sean Basu (200m and 400m), Tanay Parikh (3200m) and Anika Bhandarkar (3200m) also had races in the SCVAL championships on this cold and wet day in May.
