Wednesday, April 27 saw the El Camino League hold it’s championship meet trials…and MVTF made a mark!

At league trials, all the events with lanes–both hurdle events, and track events below 800m–compete in heats.  The winners of each heat and the next fastest times are used to select 8 athletes to compete in the league championship finals on Friday.  In addition, finals are held for the field events, and the 3200m, in the junior varsity girls and the frosh-soph boys divisions.

In the finals events contested on Wednesday, a headliner was Anika Bhandarkar who won the JV girls’ 3200m race.  Anika took off like a rocket and was the leader from the start.  A Mt. View runner tried to stay with her but ultimately fell back, and Anika lead wire to wire, putting up a 12:34 to win by more than 20 seconds.  Megan Nieh took 3rd and Manasi Prasad 6th to give Monta Vista half of the first six finishers.  Tanay Parikh took 6th place for the boys in their 3200m race.  Rahul Shankar placed 4th in shot and 8th in discus, while Michelle Zheng scored a 3rd in shot and 4th in discus.  Kristen Hsieh and Anika Manjesh added 6th and 8th place finishes in discus.  Darren Lin earned a 2nd place finish in the triple jump and Vibhav Pata a 3rd in long, and Reese Myers had a four inch PR as he tied for third in the high jump.   The girls saw a lot of success in the jumps, as Lourdes Diaz and Irene Tian went 2-3 in the triple jump.  Lourdes added a 3rd place in long jump while Irene tacked on a 6th in high jump, and Nishika Gorla added a fifth place leap in the long.  At the end of the trials day, the junior varsity girls are sitting in first place in the league with 51 points, a three point lead over Fremont, while the frosh-soph boys have 23 points and are in fifth place.
