Monta Vista travelled a short distance to Saratoga High School on March 31, and came back with two wins and two losses in all-around tight dual match ups.

The frosh-soph boys lost a close one, 65-58.  The boys started fast, taking the 4×100 relay, and showed strength in the field events (Reese Myers, Vibhav Pata, Darren Lin and ace triple jumper Tanay Parikh combined to take 16 of 18 possible points in the horizontal jumps).  Tanay added a PR in the 1600 and a first in the 800, with Ruhaan Shah winning the 3200 with a PR of his own.  At the end of the meet it came down to the 4x400m relay, with Saratoga holding off MV for a narrow win.

The varsity boys also fell in a close match, 74-51.  Jacob Kunnankunni chipped in 8 points with PRs in both the discus and the shot, and Austin Hwang added a high jump PR as he earned four more field event points for MV.  Ethan Lu, Parv Jain and Andrew Cole tallied 14 of 18 possible hurdle points for MVTF, Denny Dong and Hayden Selvakumar went 1-2 in the 400m, and the boys added a 4x400m victory to close out the afternoon.

Monta Vista’s junior varsity girls held off the Saratoga team 60-49 to move to 3-0 for the season.  Anika Manjesh took the discus and Michelle Zheng the shot to give MV the advantage in the throws, while Lourdes Diaz and Nishika Gorla added points in long and triple jumps.  On the track, Margaux Francoeur, Raje Kenyan and Jasmine Varma give MVTF a quick start by winning the 1600m, 100m hurdles and the 400m–PRs for all three athletes!  Lillian Wang and Margaux went 1-2 in the 800 with Megan Nieh and Madi Polidoro doing the same in the 3200 to ice a win for the MVTF junior varsity squad.

The varsity girls added a victory of their own, 69.5-55.5.  The field events were fairly even between the teams, with Alice Ross, Lavinia Lei, Sophia Chen and Clara Fan taking several seconds and thirds to go with Clara’s win in the high jump.  On the track, Nikhita Saldi and Vivian Lau’s 1-2 in the 1600m (season bests for both athletes) got MV rolling, Valerie Ayzenberg and Katie Lee kept the team close with second place finishes in the 40o and 100 races, and Ellie Hsu and freshman Anika Bhandarkar slammed the door by going 1-2 in the 3200m.  The 4×4 team of Vivian, Valerie, Avani Kalari and Jannah Sheriff wrapped things up with a solid win.

Complete results are posted and Agnes has photos up, too!

Next up, Monta Vista visits the other MV–Mountain View–on Thursday, April 7.

Stanford Invitational

Vivian, Valerie, Avani and Jannah–the winning 4x400m team at Saratoga the afternoon before–competed in the distance medley relay at the prestigious Stanford Invitational on Friday, April 1 (no joke!).  The DMR is a combination of 1200m, 400m, 800m and 1600m legs.  The ladies qualified three weeks earlier at the St. Francis invitational, and followed that up with a fourth place finish in their heat at Stanford.  That’s a result to be proud of!  Next year, Monta Vista should have more entrants in this big time event up the peninsula from our home track.
