Let’s take a few minutes on Sunday morning to savor a great day at Hayward High School and the Haystack Tune-Up cross country invitational.
Here are a few accomplishments and moments you might want to savor:
- 46 Monta Vista athletes ran a 3 mile race faster than they ever have before!
- 38 athletes ran faster paces at Hayward compared to Baylands a few days before; some by a lot (for example, Alexandra Qiu run at a 7:48 per mile pace at the Baylands meet, and 7:08 at Hayward; Rishabh Madhan, 6:10 and 5:40 per mile). There were many athletes who walked on to the Hayward course determined to throw down some strong races, and so many of you had what might be their best efforts of the year. Perfect timing as we head towards SCVALs!
- Because we have not raced at Hayward for the past three years, not many MVXC athletes had run this course before, however Miranda Hsu, Jonah Chang, and Aidan Cushman-Kihnley all cashed in personal record opportunities.
- This was a BIG meet–there were 339 finishers in the boys’ frosh-soph division! And many North Coast Section championship contenders were there to get a look at their championship course, so these were fast races, too. So collecting seven medals is a solid achievement by MVXC! Congratulations to Tarun Gandhi, Sam Heinonen, Miranda, Ethan Wong, Rishabh, Takumi Matsunami, and Katherine Wang. You can be proud of this hardware!
- Our top team finishes were by our frosh-soph teams, with the girls in 8th and the boys thanking 5th!

We have been working hard all season to have days like this. You earned days like this through effort and persistence. I’m so happy to see runners have this much fun while trying so hard and making such strong efforts. Well done, MVXC!
