Lots of Fun Leads to 3 Team Wins!

If you missed what I said at the team dinner following the meet, it went something like this: “I feel like this was the most fun meet we’ve had so far this season and it’s because we really operated as a team! I don’t even know what the scores are but I’m proud of the way you all carried yourselves today and had fun. I don’t care if we win – well, I do care, but if we have and don’t have any fun doing it, I don’t want that.” I stand by those words! Of course, the thrower + distance runner 4x100m relay to end the meet was a blast, so thank you to all that participated.

The vibes were vibing, people were jumping into events to score open points, and there were many many smiles on faces. Let’s make every meet like that, win or lose, PR or worst time ever, rain or shine!

Girls Performance

I don’t think I’ve ever seen as dominating of a win in a dual meet as the varsity girls had against Wilcox – 115 to 7!! I don’t think winning is everything, but I think that’s just…insane. Of course, the Wilcox girls didn’t have athletes in a number of events (6), but we still showed up when they had competitors. Our varsity girls only allowed one 2nd place finish and 5 3rd place finishes and we won every single event! The team was led by Lelani Laruelle who won all 3 jumps, Katie Lee who won the 100-200 double and was on both winning relays, and Raji Kenyan who won the hurdle double and was also on both winning relays! That’s not to say there weren’t amazing performances otherwise – because there definitely were. See all the PRs at the bottom of the post. Our varsity girls are 3-0 in league competition.

The JV girls were led by Lauren Moore, who won the long and triple jump events. I also want to mention that Moore noticed there was only 1 Wilcox girl in the 300m H and jumped in just to score the automatic 3 points. She ended being quite competitive with that hurdler trailing by only a small margin. Other standouts were Even Greene and Fiona Rusak blowing away the discus throw field by 3 feet. Elaine Chen jumped into an empty 100m H race to take the guaranteed win and 5 points, posting a decent time for her first ever hurdle race (I’m so happy to see another Chen hurdling on the Monta Vista track again!!).  All around, it was a strong win from the JV girls who are now 2-1 in league competition!

Boys Performance

As the results stand right now, the varsity boys lost by 11 points to Wilcox which is a tough way to lose. Just a could events had to go a different way and we would’ve come out on top. I do think that our boys did a better job filling empty role this week, so thank you for listening to your coaches and taking care of that! Winners for the night were Ryan Shen in the high jump, Agasthya Kothuri in the triple jump, Ethan Zhu in the 110m H, Denny Dong in the 400m, and Tanay Parikh in the 800m.

The JV boys came out with their 2nd win in league competition with a deciding victory over Wilcox. Leading the team were Ethan Yang who won the long jump, triple jump, 1600m, and was part of the winning 4x400m relay, and Alex Frefel who won both the 65m and 300m H and was on the winning 4x400m relay. We had great showings from Eddie Fan and Adam Abdelrahman who went 1-2 in each throwing event. Fan took the discus throw and Abdelrahman had the edge in the shot put. And as is always nice, we ended things with an easy win in the 4x400m relay made up of Yang, Jake TongIvan Shilakhov, and Frefel. The JV boys are 2-1 in league competition.
