Wilcox Dual Meet Recap

MVTF Goes 3 For 4

Wilcox High School paid a visit to Cupertino to face the Monta Vista track and field team this past Wednesday in dual meet action. Monta Vista was able to manage wins from the Varsity (94-31) and JV boys (61-44), and the JV girls (68-45). The Varsity girls’ team lost a close one (50-62) to the Chargers.

We had a number of awesome PRs and a lot of grit shown in this competition. It looks like South Bay is skipping right over spring and heading straight to summer with the heat that we’ve had lately, but our Matadors handled it well! I hope some of your are starting to feel the fruits of your months of labor leading up to this season. Your coaches design your training such that you are in top competition form towards the end of April and May, so it will only get better from here!

I want to shoutout all of those that stayed to the end of the meet and helped us get everything cleaned up. We cannot host a meet without the help of all of our athletes moving hurdles, placing and picking up cones, setting flags out, pushing the block cart, raking the pits, etc. So far, I have loved the enthusiasm that most of you have for pitching in. Let’s get EVERYONE involved at our next meet against Saratoga, which happens to be another home meet. You are all expected to stay for the entire meet, but more than that you should WANT to stay for the entire meet. Your teammates in the later races and field events deserve your support – you would want as many people as possible cheering for you if you were running a 3200m race, right?? So please stick around for the whole meet, help us clean up, and then enjoy some pizza with your teammates!

Girls’ Point Scorers

Miranda Hsu and Naomi Hsu both battled it out for a 1-2 sisterly finish in the varsity girls 1600m. The Hsu’s came back in the 800m to place 2-3 with Suhani Pahuja earning 1st place. M. Hsu said “why not” and jumped in the 300m hurdles to earn a 3rd place, with Sophia Yamada getting barely edged out by the Wilcox hurdler for 2nd place. In the varsity girls 3200m, Mel Zhao earn a 2nd place finish in a field of all sophomores. Gillie Ross dominated in the varsity girls’ field with 10 points coming from wins in both the shot put and discus throw. Allie Rummelhoff cleaned up nicely with a pair of 2nd place finishes in the shot put and discus throw. Meyra Olcay rounded out the discus throw sweep with a 3rd place finish. Lauren Moore leaped to 3rd place in the long jump and a win in the triple jump followed by a 2nd place triple jump finish from Jasmine Zhao. Great job varsity ladies!

On the girls’ JV side, we saw a sweep in the 1600m. Taylor Orr returned from injury to win the race, followed by Sophia Li in 2nd and Kaitlyn Lum in 3rd. In the 100m hurdles, Ellie Kong earned the win. Evie Hufnagel switched things up and ran the 400m and wound up as the 1st finisher! Mya Vu also recently returned from injury and beat out all of the competition in the 100m, almost breaking 15 seconds. Li and Myra Mishra took 1-2 in the 800m, and to round things out, Medha Rustagi grabbed 3rd place in the 3200m. Nicely done!

Boys’ Point Scorers

Tarun Gandhi and Sam Heinonen ran an extremely strong 1600m race to 1-2, respectively, to get the varsity boys going on the track. After a few timing misfires, Constantine Chua still pulled out the win in the 110m hurdles. Jonah Chang won the 400m with Kento Murase not far behind in 3rd place. Jayden Tang found his way back to the top of the podium in the 100m, with Jeffrey Choy right behind in 2nd place. The Gandhi-Heinonen battle continued in the 800m, but this time it was Heinonen who crossed first by 1 tenth of a second! Gandhi took a much-respected 2nd place. Chua returned in the 300m hurdles to make light work of 1st place. Choy and Max Shaykin went 1-2 in the 200m, both with new PRs. Ethan Yang ran a pretty lonely 3200m, winning by almost 2 minutes ahead of 2nd place! In the field, Ryan Shen was the star with 15 of his own points, winning all 3 jumps! Eddie Fan won the discus throw by nearly 50 feet – huge! Kingston Jourdan won the shot put, getting out in the 44s once again. Fan was right behind in 2nd place. Dayo Davies continues to impress in the long jump with a 2nd place finish which he paired with a 3rd place in the high jump. Agasthya Kothuri snagged 2nd place in the triple jump with Yang (yes, the distance runner!) in 3rd place. And to cap things off for the meet, our boys put together a solid 4x400m relay team of Chang, Chua, Gandhi, and Choy to take the win over Wilcox (some exciting splits there, including Choy’s first time under 53 seconds!).

On the JV side, we had our only 4x100m relay win of the day with a team of Evan Chen, Yibo Wang, Sudhanshu Bhagwat, and Carter Miller (we actually put 2 JV boys’ teams in front of Wilcox, nice work guys!). In the 1600m, Soma Pujara earned 2nd place followed by Jimin Park in 3rd. Aaryan Samanta had a close 2nd place finish in the 400m as he continues to work through injury recovery. Miller and Chen went 2-3, respectively, in the 100m. Pujara and Park returned in the 800m for another 2-3 finish, followed by a sweep in the 200m. Samanta, Miller, and Chen took 1-2-3, respectively. To round things out on the track, the boys swept the 3200m with Ritik Shenoy, Aiden White, and Darin Young going 1-2-3, respectively. Michael Zhilinsky returned from injury to win both the long and triple jumps, followed by a pair of 2nd place finishes from Adam Yang in the same events. Leo Jayasena won the high jump and earned 3rd place in both the long and triple jumps. Great win, boys!
