Fremont Dual Meet Recap

Out With a Bang!

Monta Vista Track and Field wrapped up its regular season with a dual meet at Fremont High School this past Tuesday. We won three of the four divisions, with JV boys falling to the Fremont squad. However, as you’ll see below, this was an excellent meet with outstanding performances across the board! We had nearly 50 PRs, which this late in the season is an excellent sign. Some people are little beat up and/or sick, but we still competed hard and pulled together for a stellar team day. Nice work, Matadors!

Team scores:

  • JV Boys: 47-76
  • JV Girls: 73-49
  • Varsity Boys: 81-45
  • Varsity Girls: 61-53

Girls Point Scorers

To start with JV on the track, Monta Vista swept the 1600m with Sophia Li, Kaitlyn Lum, and Zeynep Dogan! Evie Hufnagel won the 100m hurdles followed by Ellie Kong in 2nd place. Sarah Kumar earned a 2nd place finish in the 400m. Mya Vu snagged 3rd place in the 100m. There was another sweep in the 800m, led by Li with Eva Huang in 2nd and Alex Perrault in 3rd. Li jumped in the 300m hurdles to earn some “free” points, taking the automatic win. Vu ran her first 200m of the season and came out on top! Her time was the 2nd fastest on the day, Varsity included. In the 3200m, Taylor Orr was the first to complete 8 laps with Medha Rustagi following in 2nd place – both ladies earned lifetime bests! To cap things off, the 4x400m relay team earned a victory with Li (4 wins on the day!), Kumar, Hufnagel, and Perrault. In the field, Ritika Sane continues her dominance in the shot put with a victory, with Ashley Ten scoring a point for 3rd place in the discus throw. Mia DeRoche had an excellent day winning the triple jump with a PR, placing 2nd in the long jump, and placing 3rd in the high jump with a PR. Vu took home 2nd in the high jump, Navya Kari 3rd in the long jump, and Kong 3rd in the triple jump. Excellent work, JV girls!

For Varsity girls, Melinda Zhao and Miranda Hsu battled back and forth in the 1600m to earn 1st and 2nd place, respectively. Meyra Olcay jumped into the 100m hurdles for the first time ever and earned a 3rd place finish. Vishakha Shastri and Sophia Yamada went 2-3 in the 400m. Hsu stepped back on the track in the 800m to take 2nd place with special distance guest, Allie Rummelhoff, close behind in 3rd. Hsu said “two can play at that game” and hopped into the 300m hurdles for some more “free” points to take the automatic win. Shastri returned in the 200m for a 3rd place finish, which was followed up by a win from Naomi Hsu in the 3200m run. Our 4x400m relay team of Shastri, M. Hsu, Myra Mishra, and Yamada ended things on the track with a victory. For field events, Gillie Ross and Rummelhoff did their usual things, which includes scoring lots of points. Ross earned 2nd place in the shot put and won the discus throw. Rummelhoff earned 3rd in the discus throw, and won the long and triple jumps. Jasmine Zhao got 3rd in the high jump, and Zoe Laruelle and Lauren Moore went 2-3 in both the long and triple jump events to complete the sweep of the horizontal jumps. Nice work on your second team win of the season!

Boys Point Scorers

For JV boys on the track, the 4x100m relay team scored first with a team of Evan Chen, Yibo Wang, Sudhanshu Bhagwat, and Carter Miller. This was followed by a 3rd place finish in the 1600m from Aiden White. Han Chau won the 65m hurdles and Miller and Chen went 2-3 in the 100m. A group of distance boys saw the opportunity to run the 300m hurdles and score some points for the team, so a big shoutout to Kavyansh Kumawat, Akshat Ambekar, and Oliver Perrault. Kumawat and Ambekar ended up 2nd and 3rd, respectively! Miller snagged another 2nd place finish in the 200m. Ambekar, after giving hurdles a try, came back in the 3200m to earn 3rd place. For field events, Chau was the leader with two event wins in the horizontal jumps. Leo Jayasena also won the high jump. Duncan Ross earned 3rd place in the shot put with Adam Yang snagging 3rd in the discus throw. Miller earned his third 2nd place finish on the day with a PR leap in the long jump, followed by a 3rd place finish from Yang. Michael Zhilinsky rounded things out with a 2nd place in the triple jump.

For Varsity, the 4x100m team of Jake Tong, Max Shaykin, Ivan Shliakhov, and Jeffrey Choy took top honors. This was followed up by a typical 1-2 finish from Riu Yamada and Tarun Gandhi in the 1600m – only 7 hundredths of a second separating them. Alex Frefel placed 2nd in the 110m hurdles followed by Constantine Chua in 3rd after a little tumble. I’m sure he loves that I included that detail. Shliakhov continues to come back to form in the 400m with a win and a time close to his season’s best. Ryan Shen and Max Shaykin went 2-3 in the 100m, separated by only 5 hundredths of a second. Yamada returned in the 800m to earn 2nd place followed by a 1-2 finish from Chua and Frefel in the 300m hurdles. The 200m saw Shaykin in 1st and Choy in 3rd, and Gandhi crossed the line 2nd in the 3200m. Our 4x400m relay team absolutely blew the doors off with the fastest time we’ve seen since the days of Denny Dong (our 400m school record holder), 3:34.08. They earned the win with a sophomore-dominated team of Chua, Yamada, Shliakhov, and Choy. In the field, Shen won both the high and long jumps, with Adarsh Inampudi winning the triple jump. Kingston Jourdan got 2nd in the shot put with Eddie Fan in 3rd. Fan also earned a 2nd place in the discus with Booker Volrath in 3rd. Inampudi came in 3rd in the high jump, Dayo Davies 2nd in the long jump, and Shen 2nd in the triple jump. Great work, gentlemen!

What’s Next, You Might Ask?

Next up on the schedule is the prestigious Arcadia Invitational. This is a huge invite with some of the best high school athletes across the country and will include Olympic gold medalist, Quincy Wilson, along with a large contingent of his elite Bullis School team. Monta Vista is proud to be sending three athletes to Arcadia: Ryan Shen in the long and triple jump events, Gillie Ross in the shot put, and Lelani Laruelle in the high jump. We wish these three the absolute best on their trip down south and we’re all pulling for big PRs for you!

Next week is Spring Break, however our training and competition is not on a break! We’re going to be hitting it pretty hard with our workout to prep for leagues and we’ll have a handful of athletes competing at the CCS Top 8 meet in Los Gatos on April 18th. The following weekend, April 24-25th will the CCS Last Chance Invitational. We’re not sure how many of our athletes will make the cut, but we’ll be entering anyone who wants to compete and we’ll see who gets in. After that, we’ll start our post-season run with ECAL trials and finals on April 29th and May 1st, respectively. So what does this mean? It means we really have to stay focused right now, nail our training, and finish the season strong! The only way you’ll make it to SCVAL, CCS, and ultimately State, is if you don’t take your foot off the gas. So let’s do this, team!
