MVTF on Top!
Monta Vista Track & Field competed in the El Camino League Championships last week at Fremont High School, facing off against our division of the SCVAL league. It was a great two days of competition that ended with the Mats outscoring all other teams when combining Varsity, JV, boys, and girls! Here are the division results (found here):
- Varsity Boys: 1st place with 168 points (2nd place was Santa Clara with 69 points)
- Varsity Girls: 2nd place with 92 points (1st place was Cupertino with 117 points)
- JV Girls: 2nd place with 95 points (1st was Santa Clara with 158 points)
- JV Boys: 3rd place with 97 points (1st was Fremont with 155, 2nd was Santa Clara with 115)
There were many highlights, outstanding performances, and qualifiers to the next round (SCVALs) but what I really want to congratulate the team on is how great of a team we were at these championships. The amount of support that I saw given, whether it was supporting the meet by moving hurdles, supporting competitors from other schools at the start and finish lines, or showing up on Wednesday’s trials just to support the JV 3200m runners when you didn’t even have a race to run, was beyond my expectations! You guys looked like a team (thank you for wearing your shirts and jackets!) and acted like one and that just makes your coaches so proud. And, as you can see from the results, it has an impact on your performance! It takes more than simply being listed as a team member on a roster to get this effect, you have to do all of these “little” things to actually feel it. Thank you so much for leaning in, and congratulations!

Some Highlights…
I would be remiss if I didn’t specifically call out a few notable highlights from the meet, starting with the varsity ladies in the field. 78 of the 92 points scored by the varsity girls was done in field events. We had zero girls in varsity sprints/hurdles/relays, and we had 5 girls in distance who collected a solid 14 points in two events (the 1600m and 3200m). Triple jump scored 24 points (sweep of top 3), long jump 19 (with 4 girls), shot put 18, discus 16, and high jump 13 (with 2 girls). To get 2nd place as a team scoring in only 7 of the 15 events…that’s pretty awesome! We had two varsity girls who were double champs, Lelani Laruelle (high and long jump) and Allie Rummelhoff (shot and triple jump). To stick with the field, on the boys side we had Han Chau as a double champ (long and triple jump) in JV and Ryan Shen as a triple champ, taking all 3 jumps for varsity boys!
On the track, there were plenty of notable performances as well! We had a few double champions, including Sophia Li (JVG 800m and 4x400m), Jeffrey Choy (VB 4x400m and 4x100m), and Ivan Shliakhov (VB 4x400m and 4x100m). The triple champions were Jayden Tang (VB 100m, 200m, and 4x100m) and Taylor Orr (JVG 1600m, 3200m, and 4x400m). Our relays went 4 for 5 (that we contested), winning both the 4x100m and 4x400m on varsity boys’ side, 4x100m on JV boys, and 4x400m for JV girls! Perhaps the most exciting performance of the day was the varsity boys in the 4x400m relay to end the meet. Constantine Chua got us off to a blistering, low 52 second split to start and no one stood a chance after that. Riu Yamada held off Santa Clara with a mid 52 split, and Ivan put it away with a high 51 second split. Our anchor, Jeffrey Choy, could have cruised to an easy win, but instead he laid down a low 52 to cross the line with the fastest time Monta Vista has seen since 2019 with 3:28.96 (they sit at 5th best in school history)!
