Coach Flatow’s first meet at Johns Hopkins will be a difficult act to follow; both the men’s and the women’s teams defending their conference indoor championships, with plenty of time up on the podium in all events.  I’m not going to go through a recap–you can read the results if you would like–but I do want to highlight a few things for the Monta Vista team as you get ready for your season opener at RustBuster:

  • At Hop, the team and your teammates matter a lot! When they were out racing, they were racing for the team. One of the coolest things I noticed in the men’s 3000 was when Immanuel LeBlond (who ran for Mt. View against us just two years ago!) took the lead, he tapped another Hop runner and said let’s go! It was all about the team. And when athletes were not running…they were cheering. Hop athletes were all around the track, all the time!

  • Everyone, everyone, had Hop gear on all day. There were no Baltimore Ravens gear or shirts from some invite or a soccer team. Just saying…you have plenty of Monta Vista gear you can wear!
  • No one, no one, left early, and everyone was on time. No one felt that they were more important than the team and the meet.
  • Everyone was there for the meeting at the end and for a Gooooooo Hop! cheer at the end of the meet.  It was great!

This is a great college with much academic pressure, just like MV, yet these student-athletes all took their team seriously, all the way to a championship. This is a great team, with a great culture. It’s fun to be a part of!

Coach and His School

I got back from the meet and hit the library today. I went to a different library today…check this out, it’s like being in the Hogwarts library.  So cool! Don’t worry, your coach is studying hard to make Monta Vista proud.
