Remember right after finals, when it seemed like summer would last forever?  Remember when it seemed like you could wait another week before you got your summer running rolling, or maybe the week after that?  Well, guess what!  You are now starting your last week of summer running!

Our first practice as a team will start at 7am on Monday, August 8!  Here is your checklist to be ready for that first practice:

For your running for the week…I would like you to make this week low-key and not particularly intense.  No steady-state or tempo runs, please.  I want you to have fun, talk to your friends, take your time to run with some of the new people for part of your runs, organize trips to the running store or afternoon hikes in the hills.  Have fun!  Everything is conversational pace this week (other than strides).  For a general outline of runs:

  • Monday:  Longish run with some hills, such as Up and Over or The Great Down Under.   New runners can cut off anywhere.  Strides on the track or on the way back to school.
  • Tuesday:  Short/medium day, maybe head to McClellan green space, drill, then run Ria’s Loop or shorter or longer depending on what you need.
  • Wednesday:  Medium day.  I’m thinking run to Varian Park, then Will’s Loop–out the back of the park to Foothill, back on Foothill to McClellan, golf course cut off to Linda Vista, then back whichever way makes sense for you to get your target mileage for the day (mileage today should be anywhere between 5 and 9 for most runners).  Strides on the track when you get back.
  • Thursday:  Easy day.  New runners can take the day off.  Warm up and Phar Lap maybe?
  • Friday:  Long run of the week!  Matadors, REI, or Horse.
  • Saturday:  Make this an easy Saturday!  Do a shake out run and hang out.  Or go to the beach.
  • Sunday:  Did someone say beach?  Or hike?  Or sandwiches and games in someone’s backyard?
  • Monday August 8:  First Practice at 7am!

See you all soon!
