On Wednesday, March 1, the Mt. View Spartans will visit Monta Vista for the first track meet of the El Camino League season.  When these teams clashed last season, the Mountain View and Monta Vista varsity girls teams were both undefeated.  When the track events were concluded, Mt. View was narrowly ahead and it looked like curtains for the Monta Vista ladies…but several stellar performances from the jumpers and throwers made up the difference, and the Matadors were on their way to an undefeated season!  There is a meet sheet posted for the Mt. View meet.  We will also talk more about the meet at practice on Monday and Tuesday February 27 and 28, and get organized regarding who-runs-what (talk to your coaches!).

Here are a few reminders in preparation for our first dual meet:

  • Every athlete–throwers, jumpers, runners, hurdlers–will be assigned a unique number.  Write this number on your hand with a sharpie (we will have a sharpie and the number lists laying around before the meet).  This number is how we make sure that your marks are recorded accurately.   Find the clipboard and do this as soon as you get to the track!ID Number
  • When it comes time to move hurdles, get up and help move hurdles!  Coach Flatow is going to rant about moving hurdles; he feels that anyone who does not help move hurdles is contributing to the breakdown of society and the decline of human civilization.  Don’t let homo sapiens down; move a hurdle, would ya?
  • Your coaches will try to make sure that everyone is assigned an event.  We have a whiteboard up with all the assignments we can.  BUT, BUT…that whiteboard is not a tablet handed down from the god of track.  If you are not on that board, and you think you should be in an event, then go find your coach and ask “should I be in the 100m? (or whatever)”.  Get on the line and compete!  Afterwards, if a coach asks “why were you not in any event?”, you want to have a better answer than “I didn’t know you wanted me there”.  Every athlete competes at every dual meet!  Unless…
  • If you are injured and can’t compete, tell your coaches, and you can help with one of the field events.  At the end of every meet, every athlete should have a mark in some event or have been helping run the meet.  This participation as athlete or helper  is part of being on a team (and is required if you are trying to earn PE credit).

Hopefully this post will inspire you during your practices over break week!  ðŸ™‚
