CCS Last Chance Recap

This past weekend, Monta Vista Track & Field sent representation to Mountain View High School for the CCS Last Chance Invitational. They did things a little differently this year with all distance events on Friday night and the rest of the meet on Saturday morning and afternoon. Below, I will cover each day of competition in detail.

Friday Night Distance Fest

We had 17 athletes run in the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m on Friday. It was actually a beautiful evening for distance racing with mild temperatures and minimal wind. Things were started off with a spectacular race from Taylor Orr in the 1600m setting a new PR and putting down a top-15 time in MV history for freshman girls with a 5:38.46! Other PRs set in the 1600m were Myra Mishra, Darin Young, Ritik Shenoy, Aiden White, and Riu Yamada who also snagged a 2nd place medal in the FSB 1600m! His time of 4:35.78 puts him in the top 5 of frosh-soph 1600m in school history. The 800m saw a run of PRs as well, including Medha Rustagi, Sophia Li, Soma Pujara, and Ethan Yang. To round things out for the day, Melinda Zhao raced to a season’s best in the 3200m under the lights! Great racing, squad!

Saturday’s Competition

All field events, sprints, and hurdles competed on Saturday, which was certainly not great conditions for such activities. It was cold, wet, and grey and the energy around the meet sure wasn’t making up for it. However, that didn’t stop our group from creating a few highlights! The 400m saw 3 new PRs set, from Vishakha Shastri, Riu Yamada, and Jeffrey Choy. Yamada and Choy went 2-3 to earn medals! Constantine Chua ran a solid 300m hurdle race to earn a 3rd place medal (along with a couple of signature hurdler knee scrapes – welcome to the club!). The girl’s 4x400m relay team of Shastri, Mishra, Li, and Orr received 2nd place medals for their performance! In the field, Ritika Sane earned a new PR in the shot put as did Nishi Doshi. Allie Rummelhoff won the event, to earn her medal for the day. Mya Vu added to her invitational medal collection with a 2nd place medal in the girl’s high jump! Han Chau also collected a 2nd place medal for his performance in the FSB triple jump. Speaking of triple jump, Zoe Laruelle got top honors with a solid jump over 33′ and Mia DeRoche earned a new PR! The biggest highlight of the day was a PR and a win in the VB high jump from Ryan Shen! He won the meet with 6’4″ and decided to go straight to 6’7″ to set his new best height. He missed the first two attempts, but with the help from the spectators he cleared the bar and with room to spare. He is now only 1 inch away from tying the school record, which would be his third school record at Monta Vista, sweeping the jumps. Great work, team!
