Santa Clara Dual / De Anza Invite Recaps

Last week, Monta Vista Track & Field participated in its fourth dual meet of the season at Santa Clara High School. It was a very nice evening of competition with some great marks that our kids should be proud of! The team scores played out as follows:

  • VG: MV 55 – SC 71
  • VB: MV 81 – SC 45
  • JVG: MV 64 – SC 59
  • JVB: MV 56 – SC 58

We also sent 8 athletes to the De Anza/Wilcox Invitational, which I will cover near the bottom of this article. The highlight of the day was a double 1-2 punch from Gillie Ross and Allie Rummelhoff in both Varsity Girls’ throwing events!

Girls’ Dual Meet Performance

For JV girls, Sophia Li and Eva Huang got things started with a 1-2 finish in the 1600m. After that, Evie Hufnagel, Ellie Kong, and Navya Kari took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, respectively, in the 100m hurdles. In the 800m, Taylor Orr came across the line 1st, followed by Li and Alex Perrault in 2nd and 3rd. Hufnagel returned in the 300m hurdles as the sole JV girl in the mixed heat with Varsity, so she took 1st but also managed to beat out all of Santa Clara’s Varsity girls! Kaitlyn Lum won the 3200m with Medha Rustagi right behind in 2nd place. Our JVG 4x400m relay ran uncontested to take the auto-win with a team of Perrault, Orr, Li, and Hufnagel! In the field, Ritika Sane earned a 3rd place in the discus throw, Audre Chang picked up another 3rd in the long jump, and our girls swept the high jump. Mya Vu leaped the highest, with Hufnagel in 2nd, and Mia DeRoche in 3rd. Chang and Kong took 2nd and 3rd in the triple jump to round things out!

On the Varsity side, the 4x100m relay got its first win of the season with a team of Rummelhoff, Zoe Laruelle, Sofia Grigolia, and Lelani Laruelle! After that, Miranda Hsu and Myra Mishra went 2-3 in the 1600m. Vishakha Shastri took 3rd in the 400m followed by another 2-3 finish from Hsu and Mishra in the 800m. L. Laruelle and Rummelhoff took 1st and 2nd in the 300m hurdles, both trying the event for the first time (with Hufnagel included on JV, we took the top 3 times of the day!). Naomi Hsu scored the final points on the track with a win in the 3200m. In the field, Ross, Rummelhoff, and L. Laruelle went 1-2-3 in the shot put and discus throw to score 18 of the 55 total points that MV’s Varsity girls scored. Z. Laruelle won the long jump and Lauren Moore won the triple jump.

Boys’ Dual Meet Performance

Let’s look at JV boys first! The 4x100m relay team of Evan Chen, Sudhanshu Bhagwat, Yibo Wang, and Carter Miller got things started with a win. Miller came back in the 100m for a win and that was followed up by a 2-3 finish in the 800m from Oliver Perrault and Soma Pujara. The last points scored on the track were from the trio that swept the 3200m – Ritik Shenoy, Aiden White, and Darin Young! For the field, Booker Volrath won the shot put and discus throw. Aaryan Samanta won the high jump. In the horizontal jumps, MV saw two sweeps! For the long jump, Michael Zhilinsky, Misha Bakhtin, and Adam Yang went 1-2-3, respectively. In the triple jump, our 1-2-3 finishers were Zhilinsky, Leo Jayasena, and Yang.

For Varsity, Riu Yamada got us started with a win in the 1600m with Tarun Gandhi very close behind in 2nd place. Constantine Chua and Alex Frefel laughed their way to a 1-2 finish the 110m hurdles which was followed up by a 2-3 finish out of Ivan Shliakhov and Jonah Chang in the 400m, respectively. Jeffrey Choy and Ryan Shen shared a 3rd place finish in the 100m for running the exact same time out of separate heats. Yamada returned in the 800m to win, which was followed up by another event win from Chua in the 300m hurdles. Choy and Jayden Tang went 2-3 in the 200m and Sam Heinonen won the 3200m. Final points on the track were scored by our VB 4x400m relay team of Shliakhov, Chua, Yamada, and Choy. In the field, Kingston Jourdan won the shot put with Eddie Fan finishing 2nd. Fan came back in the discus throw to win by a 31 foot margin, though. Shen won all of the jumps and had his buddy, Adarsh Inampudi, in 2nd place for the high and triple jumps. Han Chau, a freshman, earned 3rd place in both the long and triple jump events.
