Monta Vista cross country hosted our first ever cooking class on Friday night, November 2nd…and it felt like a smashing success!

Hosted by Whole Foods-Cupertino and healthy eating specialists Alice and Jamie, 21 MVXC runners all participated in two hours of culinary experimentation.  Different groups of runners prepared six different dishes, including home-made protein bars, quinoa salad, a vegetarian and a chicken ceviche.  When we finished, we shared all our dishes and ate ‘family style.’

Alice and Jamie were pretty much blown away by how much our team knows about nutrition.  However, there is a leap from knowing about lipids and glycogen and amino acids, and chopping up a bunch of vegetables.   We that a big bowl of fresh vegetables and a roast chicken is better for us than a McDonald’s super-sized meal, but HOW do we get that meal prepared?  Sure we could pester our parents for the next year or so 🙂 but what do we do after that?  (And how amazed would our parents be if we whipped up dinner one night?)  The MVXC cooking class is meant to be one step in helping all of us understand the HOW, the practical steps towards taking control of our own healthy nutrition and eating habits.

Wow, that last sentence made the class seem boring.  But it was not a boring class at all!  While we learned a bit about cooking and nutrition, we also had some great team building time and just a lot of fun and laughs together.

We will have more classes like this!  We will do this at Whole Foods again, and also try different venues and different instructors, to see what else we might learn about food and cooking.  We hope you want to continue to expand your culinary knowledge, and do this as a team!

A big thank you to Mrs. La Plain for leading the effort to arrange this class!

The recipes will be on line later this week. [The recipes are now posted here.]  There are more photos posting in the gallery, too.

And remember…cooking is not only about being healthy.  If you know how to cook, you will always have friends!
