I remember this intersection…I don’t remember these fire trucks.

There have been many questions about the Monterey Bay Invitational since we posted that meet on the MVXC schedule, so I thought I’d update everyone on the status.

Monterey Bay was added after Earlybird was cancelled.  The plan is for the 2016 CCS Cross Country championships to be held at Toro Park; when Earlybird was cancelled, we added Monterey Bay to the schedule so we would have a race at Toro.

However, the Soberanes Fire is still not contained.  The Soberanes Fire is not close to Toro Park; Toro is being used as the staging area for the firefighters, and so the park is closed to the public.

I went to try to get an update over this weekend and I can’t get any definitive answers but it seems to me, and others, that there is a possibility that the Monterey Bay Invitational could also be cancelled, and there is also a possibility that the CCS championship meet could be moved.  There is no final answer now.

So, we all need to be flexible.  Here are the answers to what I imagine is the FAQ:

  • Whether or not we go to the Monterey Bay Invitational, the meet will be optional for MVXC athletes.
  • If we do go to Monterey Bay, we will have to do some last minute ride pooling (I’d looked into a bus, and found a bus so that the burden on the parents would be reduced, but based on the status of the fire I thought it was wise to not commit to a bus for transportation).
  • If Monterey Bay is cancelled, but the CCS meet will still be held at Toro, we will try to drive the varsity runners down to Salinas on a Saturday for a workout at Toro.
  • If the championship meet is moved, I’d imagine that CCS would try to arrange to hold the championships at Crystal.  But who knows at this point.  If the meet is at Crystal, we already have two races scheduled there.  If the championships are for some reason held somewhere else, we can practice at that location.

So, let’s not worry for now!  These events are beyond our control so let’s not worry at this point.  What we can control is our training and work, our individual and group efforts to be the best we can be.  So let’s focus on that!

See you at practice…
