Discord is Banned: Switch to BAND!

Some of you already know that Discord is now a banned application for Monta Vista clubs and other after school programs and sports. With that, we are moving onto a different platform: BAND. I know there’s a lot of love for our Discord server, and a few have already expressed that they’d love it if there was a way to archive all of the photos from Discord – I’m working on that! However, we all have to accept the fact that our Discord is going away and to make the process the easiest on everyone, I’ll need your swift attention to the instructions on migrating over to BAND. It’s pretty simply.

1. If you are an XC athlete or parent, use this link to join our MVXC group on BAND:

https://band.us/n/aca3b7j9wcS7t

You’ll be prompted to create a new account if you do not have one already. I recommend installing and using the mobile app on your phone, as well.

NOTE: We’ll either create a separate BAND for track and field in the winter or use a different app, TBD. Look out for emails this winter on that, but track and field athletes will not be approved to join the MVXC band.

3. You’ll answer a question about yourself and finally submit your request to join the group. Just follow the on-screen instructions. At some point, I will approve you to gain access to the group – please be patient.

4. Once I have approved you, you will be able to open the MVXC band from the home screen and you should be immediately prompted to enter your bio. Please fill that out how I’ve requested – students will simply write their grad year, parents will say “[Name]’s Parent” where [Name] is their student’s name.

5. That’s pretty much it! You can navigate and poke around BAND as you would any other new app. No, it’s not a 1:1 comparison to Discord. In many ways I think this app will be better than Discord for effective communication. The main thing I’d like to point out is that you’ll find the chats in the upper right hand portion of the screen after you click into the MVXC band. In order to see the chats, you must agree to the terms of the chat.

5. Our Discord server will also need to be cleaned out of current students. You can remove yourself from the server or wait for me to remove you. I will be removing all current MV students from this server by Friday, whether you join our BAND or not.

I plan to keep the discord server open for alumni if they’d like, ideally transferring ownership over to someone who wants to manage it.

I will cover more on this at practice today (Wednesday) and be happy to answer any questions there – except please don’t ask “Why do we have to get rid of Discord?” My answer is: it’s not up to us, it’s up to the district and we will respect and accept that rule.
