The Monta Vista track season got real with our first meet at the 9th Annual Willow Glen Invitational!
Despite a challenging weather day–we had rain in the morning and strong wind pretty much continuously–Monta Vista had a great day of competition. The progress the team has made is amazing; only four years ago in 2011, the first year we competed at the WG meet, we had 8 athletes sign up to compete. This year we had 33 athletes sign up and brought home 16 medals! A few highlights of the day, in no particular order, include:
-Freshman Elizabeth Ngo was the first MV competitor of the year, running her first high school race ever (Varsity girls 100h).
-Bridget Gottlieb and Madeleine Yip went 1-2 in the 3200m.
-Rohan Choudhury had a 10 second PR while placing 2nd in the Varsity Boys 3200m.
-Zach Patti also PRed in the 1600m–impressive for the first meet of the season in windy conditions!
-Archit Dua not only had a monster PR in the 1600m after years of injury and illness, he also demonstrated leading sportsmanship and inspiration by waiting at the finish and congratulating every finisher in his heat!
-Scott Gregory ran a particularly smart and strategic race, with a big 1600m PR in his first high school race.
-Jenny Xu (1600m) and Sunny Shan (800m) both took silver medals, as the MV girls medaled in every race 800m or longer.
-Richelle Ju and Sanjna Bharadwaj went 1-3 in the Varsity High Jump, both equalling their PRs in the first meet of the season.
-MV had double medal winners Emma Seyer (in Varsity discus with a huge PR and also in the shot put), and Max Sawyer (in the Frosh-Soph 800m and a gold in the 1600m)–Donald, did you pick up both hurdle medals too???
-The Varsity boys took a thrilling silver medal in the 4x400m relay, the last event of the day. Their 4:45 clocking was only 10 seconds after last season’s best, and they achieved this time without any exchange practice at all! John Hsiao, Steven Lim, Anand Rao and Rochish Ambati got our relay team off to a great start of the season.
