“Hey, man, simple ain’t easy.”

-Thelonious Sphere Monk 1917-1982

It has been incredibly, stupidly hot yesterday and today (Saturday September 2); at my house right now it is 106°.  No way do I want to go out running right now, and I don’t want any of you running outdoors either (it’s not safe to run in this heat, and even if you did squeeze out a few miles without collapsing the quality of the work would be poor).   So what do you do if you want to get a good workout today?  You could have done what 30 kids plus your coaches did–get up at 7am and run before it gets hot!

We have a simple solution–run before it gets hot.  But not easy–we have to have the discipline, willpower and forethought to be up and ready to run at 7am with our team.

Front Seven On Rep Seven

And people, we had a fine workout today!  We went out to Matadors’ Point to run fast-tempo intervals, Dirty 6s along the reservoir.  Most of us, including coach, got 5 to 10 solid reps in the books.  The front seven girls ran as a powerful pack for the workout, the boys had quite a few groups of three or four working together, and I didn’t see many runners working solo for more than a rep or two.  Most of us did a good job of working together and helping each other get a good morning of work.

Following the workout, a quick trip back to the track for bananas, bagels, nut butter and orange juice and home before the weather was stifling!

It’s simple to keep improving–work at your running.  It’s simple, but not easy.

This weekend is going to be pretty hot.  I really don’t want you out running in the blazing sun.  If you did miss the window for beating the heat, what you can do is get in a pool for swimming or water running, or stay inside and get some extra core work in (you cannot do too much core!).  Be safe, please!

Nice work, team!

See you all on Monday, 7am!  Monday morning is going to be a long, continuous run and I think we will all enjoy the cruise.  Let’s get a great start to Labor Day!
