It was great seeing so many of you running this week, as I dropped by some of the workouts at MV at 7am and at 6pm.  I got in some nice mileage with both groups, and people are running great!  Some observations…

  • There are people running together both at 7am and at 6pm.  Both times have advantages, so if you are looking for people to run with, you will probably find someone to run with.
  • Everyone I saw running with MV is putting in solid effort.  There was no dogging the runs!  If you all continue to maintain that level of effort for the rest of July…you will come back to school in August in the best shape of your lives, prepared to have good seasons this fall with lots of PRs!
  • If you have not been running with the group…it is not too late to join up!  We don’t care if you are are fast or slow as long as you are ready to put in consistent effort.  If you are slower, don’t worry, we all started out slower than we are now; get out there and work (and use faster runners as targets) and you will improve.  If you think you are faster than everyone else…well, run a couple laps when everyone gets rolling, go catch them, then get some add on miles and finish at the same time.  No matter what, you are contributing to group effort and group success at the same time as you are pushing yourself and working towards your own goals.  So come join your teammates for a run!

Remember…your relentless effort will pay off!  If run consistently, you will improve.  If you run with others who push you or give you more energy, you will improve faster.  It’s really cool!  First practice is in five weeks…and you can rack up a lot of miles and a lot of improvement in five weeks!  Go for it!

Reminders:

If you have not had your annual physical yet, do it now!  You can’t practice with the team until you have turned in your physical paperwork, signed by your doctor.  And if you are a sophomore, junior or senior you will not be allowed to join the team at all unless you have all your paperwork complete in the first week.  So…get your physical scheduled now, please!  This is a school requirement, and this is for your personal safety.

Do something fun with your teammates!  Schedule something yourself, or say ‘yes!’ when someone has an idea of their own.

There are several graduated MVXC runners who are out with the team…don’t hesitate to ask them for advice.  They have lots of knowledge, so see what you can learn before they head off to Berkeley, Stanford, Art Center…

Hydrate!  Stretch!  Core!

Have a great summer–with lots of running!
