Lots of smiles of satisfaction once again at the Artichoke Invitational at Half Moon Bay on October 7, 2017!

We should start with our Frosh-Soph boys, who had been knocking on the door of a big success for a while.  MVXC had not run all the top FS boys together in a race yet, as either the race format did not give us a FS division, or we pulled up Nitin Subramanian and Kyle Tsujimoto to varsity.  At Artichoke, we put all our cards on the table–or our sophomores and freshman in the race–and came up aces as our Frosh-Soph boys team pulled out a 6 point victory and meet championship over East Bay track power James Logan.  This was a very strong performance top-to-bottom!  The Monta Vista Varsity and Junior Varsity boys both had excellent days with second place finishes.  One of the notable accomplishments of the boys at Artichoke was that our top seven times–by Jeffrey Xu 12:42, Justin Lin 12:48, Derek Lee 12:53, Kingsley Wang 13:04, Aravind Meyyappan 13:11, Nitin and Kyle both clocked at 13:19 on the 2.33 mile course–were also individual PRs for these athletes.  These boys were not only our best on Saturday, but they are also hard working and focused on continuing to improve; it’s great to see these good results!

The MVXC girls also had many highlights, lead by the varsity girls’ championship run.  One of  the strengths and hallmarks of this year’s team is that our team is strong top to bottom, with different girls pushing the pace in different races.  Weaker athletes can lose focus and let races get away from them when they are not in the order they expect, but our girls know that week-to-week different girls might be feeling wonderful and we all need to push no matter where we are.  This week it was Triya Roy’s turn to romp in first for MV, recording a 54 second PR and a fourth place finish, followed closely by Sarah Feng, Claire Chang, Sanjana Borle and Lauren Ling as MVXC held off Northgate.  In the Frosh-Soph division, Sylvana Northrup ran a very smart race, lying back around 10th place after the first loop of the track and then moving up steadily to finish with the individual frosh-soph large school division championship!  Sylvana’s win lead the Frosh-Soph girls to a third place finish, while the JV girls’ came in fourth as a team behind Serena Geis’ second place finish.

Overall, Monta Vista athletes recorded an impressive 33 personal records on Saturday, a gratifying amount of improvement that reflects the hard work that our team has put in, not only during this season but also during the entire year since we last travelled to Half Moon Bay to race.

Our athletes always make a great impression as people as well as athletes, and this meet was no exception.  At the end of the meet, as Coach Flatow and Coach Johnson went to collect the team championship awards for the Varsity girls and Frosh-Soph boys, the volunteers working the chute waved to get our attention.  The volunteers wanted to tell us how NICE the Monta Vista athletes were all day, being polite and respectful to the volunteers, saying thank you, and also congratulating and high-fiving competitors.  Team…people really notice these things.  You are making the world a better place, one cross-country meet at a time.  Believe in karma!  These little good deeds you do will come back to you.  The universe will do something nice for you in a way you did not expect or connect, I truly believe this!  And…we are really proud of all of you.   You are a wonderful team, in so many ways!
