Monta Vista track and field made a huge statement at leagues,  and on May 12 will bring the largest MVTF contingent to the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League qualifier meet in at least a decade!

Over the two days of the El Camino League Championships, Monta Vista athletes racked up a total of 59 medals (finishers in the Top Five of the league).  Two MVTF boys scored Varsity division championships, Eliot Lubomirsky in the 400m race and Jeffrey Xu in the 3200m.  Among the girls, Kelly Bishop won the league championship in the 1600m race while freshman Nitin Subramanian won two frosh-soph division championships, sweeping the distance events with wins in both 1600m and 3200m events.

Other highlights include taking six of ten possible medals in the varsity 3200m events, as Jeffrey Xu, Bennett Zhang, Derek Lee, Sarah Feng, Parvathi Meyyappan, and Claire Chang demonstrated collective greediness endurance and strength as they demonstrated Monta Vista strength in the long races.  We also saw the brother-sister team of senior Andy Ma and freshman Katherine Ma both win medals in the 800m race–that’s a pretty good day for the Mas!

Monta Vista also had two relay team champions, as the junior varsity girls and the varsity boys both scored wins in the 4x400m relays.  Congrats to the teams of Claire Ettinger, Jasmine Lee, Lauren Ling, Victoria Tung, Derek Zheng, Andy Ma, Scott Gregory and Eliot Lubomirsky on these sweet wins!

Overall, Monta Vista teams finished third in the league in a very strong showing.

The league championships are also the qualifier meet to the next competition, SCVALs; which is itself a qualifier to the Central Coast Section meet.  Monta Vista has almost double the number of qualifiers to the SCVAL meet as last year!  Some of the highlights include:

MVTF qualifiers to the top heat of the 100m in both boys’ and girls’ races (Morris Chiang and Evelyn How).

Monta Vista has two of the eight spots in the fast heat of the boys’ 400m and 800m races–remember that there are 14 teams competing for eight spots and Monta Vista claimed two!  Six schools were completely shut out of even one starter in a fast heat, while our athletes took four starting spots.  These are the same four boys running our 4×4 relay.  Nice job!

In the Varsity girls’ 3200m, Monta Vista has four girls either in the race or as alternates…which is a neat trick since there are only three standard entries in any race!  Our distance kids are pretty stunning from top to bottom.

In summary…a great week for Leagues, and it’s not over–a great week is coming up!

Practice is still going, although we are not taking attendance any longer.  Even if you are not advancing to SCVALs you may still practice with the team.  Anyone who is out and working hard is contributing to the energy of the team!

Complete results for Leagues are on line.

There are a lot of great photos from Mr. Ma available for viewing and download.

There is a SCVAL schedule posted here.  If you are competing at SCVAL or planning to spectate or help run the meet, PLAN TO ARRIVE EARLY.  Traffic on Friday is horrible, getting to Los Gatos High School and finding parking is horrendous.  No joke–arrive early!

Please remember to sign up / RSVP for the Monta Vista track and field banquet on May 16!

Great work, MVTF!  And it’s still not done.
