In only four weeks, MVXC14 will hold the first practice of the season!  That’s right–the first official practice will be Friday, August 15 at 3:20pm!

Hard to believe, isn’t it?–for many of us, summer seems like it has just gotten started!  I hope your summer has been filled with a lot of fun–summer is the time to relax and be a kid, after all!–and for many of you, I hope you had some other good experiences–travel with your family or friends, maybe a good class or camp, or something else both memorable and educational.

And of course…I hope you are getting in some running!  That first practice will be here sooner that we think.  Remember, every run you do is like putting money in the back–every mile goes into your fitness bank, so that you can make withdrawals at every workout and every race this Fall!

Even if you have not been running a whole lot, it’s not too late!  There are runners meeting at 9am from Monday through Friday at the Monta Vista track for informal, student led runs.  Even if you have never run before, come along and introduce yourself and get started!  These are non-pressure general conditioning sessions, and it’s a good chance to get to meet your future teammates (we love seeing incoming freshman come and join us!).  If you have any questions about the team summer running, don’t hesitate to drop an email to Jenny Xu chickenloverjx@gmail.com, Rohan Choudhury duckster7@gmail.com or Akshay Thontakudi akshay.thontakudi@gmail.com.

You don’t have to do anything special with summer running–in fact, it is BETTER if you are not racing or training at  race pace!  That is right, summer is a time to leave all those painful and hard interval workouts behind and get lots of aerobic mileage.  Forget all those repeat 400s!  This is fun running, yet this will help you a lot.  Here is an article by Olympian Pete Pfitzinger that will explain why building a big aerobic base over the summer will help you so much.

So, if you have been training consistently this summer, maybe now is the time to add 10% to your mileage…and if you thinking that this is the year you join XC for the first time, maybe today is the day you finally get out and run for the first time this summer–even 20 minutes is a great start!

I know that we are going to have a great season–and I believe that everyone can have a special season!  It is up to you–you will get out of the season what you put into the season–so I hope you are starting to make deposits in your fitness bank account every week!

See you soon!  Best wishes and best of luck!

PS:  Don’t forget to have your physical paperwork done before school starts!  If you don’t have your doctor’s appointment yet, please have your parents make this appointment right away!  All the doctors get booked when school starts so it really helps to get this done early.  The paperwork you need to complete is available on the MV web site.

Also, it’s time to start thinking about new shoes!  Here is a great set up from one of last year’s varsity runners:  New trainers, new racing flats and some new running socks, too!  What a great set up and a great way to start the season with brand new gear.  Wow, I just look at that new gear and I wish that XC was starting tomorrow so I could go out and run super fast!
