School is out, summer is starting!  Everyone looks pretty happy and relaxed…there are lots of plans for a great summer!  Here are some things to keep in mind…

Annual Physicals:  Don’t forget to ask your parents to schedule your physical as soon as possible!  You may not begin practice with the team in August until you provide your doctor’s approval, and if you wait until later in the summer your doctor might not have an appointment available.  You can print the physical forms from the school web site.  When you schedule your physical, it’s a great idea to ask to have your blood tested also, here is why.

Summer Running Plans:  We passed out a summer running information sheet at the pre-season meeting, if you missed the meeting you can download the handout.  There is lots of information in the document on resources for your summer training, as well as an outline of general training.  If you want more, I can help you with a specific plan.  There is a morning run group being coordinated by Akshara, Jeffrey and Justin; contact them for information; no matter what, find running partners, don’t do all your running alone!  Talk to each other and seek out each other often; we are always stronger together!

Heart Rate Training and other curious information:  I’ve been experimenting with running with a heart rate monitor.  I’m learning some interesting things, and I’ll post what I find from time-to-time; here is a post on warm ups.  I’ll post more over the summer.  One conclusion I have is that heart rate monitors are not necessary to run with but they can be useful as you get objective feedback on effort which is useful as you learn how to pace yourself.
