Monta Vista Track & Field is proud to host Dr. Steve Portenga, sport psychologist for USA track & field, and the sport psychologist who will be attached to the USA Olympic track & field team in London, to speak on Tuesday evening, May 1, 2012 at 6:30pm in the Monta Vista High School auditorium.

Steve will be speaking on performance psychology as it is applied to optimizing competitive performance on the athletic fields, and relating how the psychological tools and mindset also apply to personal performance in life–in school, in work, in personal relationships.

‘Why do I want to succeed?’  How we answer this seemingly simple question will have a huge impact on how hard and how effectively we are willing and able to work towards success and improvement.  Our mindset effects how we perform in competition (whether that competition is on the athletic field or in the classroom, or in our future careers), and how we sustain the long-term, persistent effort needed to make big personal breakthroughs in sports and in life.  Steve will discuss how to develop a forward focus, motivation and a focus on goal attainment during his evening talk at Monta Vista.  The mindset that we are encouraging is not only useful to becoming a better athlete, this mindset can result in becoming a better and more successful student in high school and college, and successful in attaining our major life goals.

This talk is appropriate to student-athletes seeking to improve their mental approach to sports—and school—and also is appropriate for parents who are looking for how to understand and support their student-athletes.  Steve’s talk is appropriate for athletes participating in any sport.  Coaches of all sports are invited to attend.

Dr. Steve Portenga is owner of iPerformance Psychology.  After his undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan, he coached alpine skiing for the Vail Development team before earning his Master’s degree in exercise and sport science from the University of Utah and his PhD in counseling psychology from the University of Missouri.

Steve is the chair of the psychological services subcommittee for USA Track and Field.  He provides sport psychology services to elite level track and field athletes affiliated with USA National Teams.  Services include USATF coaching education and development clinics, psychology skills assessment, individual performance enhancement consulting, and on site support at national and international competitions, including several world championship events.

Steve will be the lead sport psychologist attached to the USA Olympic Track and Field team at the London Olympics this summer in 2012.

Steve has presented at national and international conferences on issues such as leadership, coaching, team development, and professional issues in sport psychology.  And now, Steve will be presenting at Monta Vista High School to our track & field family!

COSTS:  We believe that having Steve Portenga come to talk to our parents and athletes is such a great opportunity, and that the topics are so important, that anyone may attend at NO cost; however, we will be ‘passing the hat’ for voluntary donations to the Monta Vista track & field and cross country programs.  If you feel that Steve’s presentation has been of value to you, please consider a donation of $5 to $10 to support our student-athletes; cash is fine and checks may be made payable to Monta Vista ASB.  All donations go to the T&F/CC ASB fund and are tax deductible –of course…check with your own tax advisor! 🙂
