March 28 Invitationals: Firebird and adidas MOC

Monta Vista is attending two invitationals in force this weekend!

Sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers dominate the  Matador entries to the Firebird Invitational at Fremont High School–we have 28 athletes competing as of Monday night, with one more day to sign up.  One of the unique features at Firebird is that many events are structured as both individual and simultaneously as 3-person team competitions; for example, in the shot put, if there are three throwers from the same team, these throwers are automatically counted as a ‘team’ and their three distances are added together to compete against other three person teams from other schools.   An athlete can earn an individual medal and a team medal at the same time!  As of Monday night, we have several of these teams entered already:

Varsity Boys’ Discus:  Sanat, Ajay, Namir

Varsity Boys’ Shot:  Sanat, Ajay, Namir

Frosh-Soph Girls’ 100m Hurdles:  Elizabeth, Annabel, Sabrina (when we told Sabrina about this event, it took her about 10 seconds to recruit a team!)

Varsity Girls’ 100m Hurdles:  Nicole, Victoria and Alice (I’m figuring that Nicole and Victoria will get Alice out there!)

(we have a huge hurdle team–F-S boys, why don’t you get some 3 person groups together for both 65m and 300m?)

Varsity Girls’ High Jump:  Sanjna, Jasmine, Gina, and Victoria (maybe!)

Many of our distance runners are heading down South to Azusa Pacific University for the annual adidas Meet of Champions Distance Classic.  To give you an idea of what this meet is like–there are 35 heats of the 800m, 83 heats of the 160om, and 13 heats of the 3200m!  It’s heaven for distance runners (sprinters are probably horrified)!   But if you are distance runner, running 800m or longer–this is a pretty fun day!  We are sending 18 athletes down for this event, bring our total athletes competing this weekend at either Firebird or MOC to almost 50!  Holy smokes!
