During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been following all the county health directives.  For most of March, April and May in 2020, this meant that MVXC was not able to meet in person.  But in June, that changed!  With the support of Monta Vista and FUHSD, MVXC filed a workout safety plan with the county of Santa Clara and we are back in business!  This is the first step towards a summer season of cross country competition.  And we are acing this test!

We have planned for two training sessions, each session is three weeks long.  These sessions are not incredibly intense!  If you are worried that we are going to be crushing workouts like it’s October and we are prepping for SCVALs, don’t be concerned–that is not the plan.  This is summer running with a coach, so that 12 student-athletes can safely get together at one time during the pandemic (and as long as a coach is there, maybe a little more structure?).

We are now wrapping up the second week of the first set of summer training sessions.  Our next session will be from July 13 through August 1.  We can accommodate up to 36 athletes for the July 13 session.  If you want to participate, here is what you do:

  1. Have your parents complete the parent release form.  Please do this first, we may not add you to a training cohort until your parents have completed this release!  If your parents would like more safety information, have them check out the plan.

  2. Please complete the MVXC Application form.  This form is used to figure out who is interested, who can attend at various times, and allow us to group you into cohorts.  Emailing coach to ask to be put into a training group does not replace filling out this form!

We are looking forward to having you train with us! IMG_5539

Some Frequently Asked Questions:
  • Q. I’m a freshman, can I join the training?  A. YES YES YES!  We want new freshman to join us.  We will make you feel comfortable with high school, help you to stay healthy and make new friends, and welcome you to the MVXC family.  Our training is customized to allow you to safely adjust to high school athletics.  Bring a friend from Kennedy or Lawson so you have a buddy, and you will make ten more friends by the end of the session!
  • Q. I compete in another sport at Monta Vista, but maybe I want to try cross country–especially if cross might be one of the only sports active in the Fall.  Can I try the summer training?  A.  YES!  We like having athletes from other sports try cross.  Cross country can make you fit for basketball, soccer, wrestling and other sports.  There are examples of athletes from soccer, football, wrestling and other sports making the varsity team and going to the State meet in cross country, and then going back to their home sport with more endurance and speed than ever before.  You never know how much you like running cross, or how good a runner you can be, until you try.
  • Q.  Can I run with a friend?  A.  Sure!  There is a place in the interest form to request a partner.
  • Q.  I have a conflict with a summer activity that means I will only be at practice one or two days a week.  Can I still join summer running?  A.  Maybe.  We will prioritize athletes who can attend all 15 practices during the session, next the athletes that will only miss a couple of practices, and then last if there is room we will add athletes who will miss more.

  • Q.  I can’t run with the group because (conflict with SAT prep, I’m taking an on-line class in how to clone my pet cat, my parents won’t let me, I have a lot of Fortnite to play), you know.  What should I do?  A.  You can always run on your own, or you can find another person in the same Overwatch schedule as you and run with them.  It takes a little more self-discipline to get out by yourself, but you can still get out there and do it!
  • Q.  Are the workouts going to crush me?  A.  The first group seems uncrushed so far.  We are conscious that this is the time for summer running.  Don’t worry we will be kind!  We have a long, slow build to SCVALs and CCS!
